The best SWMS software in Australia

A SWMS is only worth something if it matches the job on the day — the plant that turned up, the crew that signed it, the tickets they actually hold. Eight tools, compared on exactly that.

Each tool, and who it suits

1. Burgy

burgy.com.au

Best for: Civil and plant contractors who want the SWMS tied to the machines and crew actually on the job.

Where it wins

  • SWMS, JSA, Take 5 and toolbox meetings built in, with digital signatures, and a job link that shares its safety documents
  • Permits and licences with expiry alerts in the same system
  • Per-machine prestarts, where a failed item raises a repair job automatically
  • Chemical register, safety document library, and site attendance
  • Plant registry, service schedules and repair jobs alongside the paperwork

Watch for

  • Built for contractors running their own crews and plant, not for principal contractors reviewing hundreds of subcontractors
  • No AI document review and no Procore integration

2. HammerTech

hammertech.com

Best for: Principal contractors and large builders running SWMS, permits and inductions across many subcontractors.

Where it wins

  • SWMS review workflow with assigned reviewers, reviewer digital signatures and version history
  • Permits and worker inductions on the same platform
  • QR code plant pre-start and servicing checks
  • Automatic verification that operators are licensed for the equipment

Watch for

  • Repairs, parts and timesheets were not described

4. Sitemate (Dashpivot)

sitemate.com

Best for: Teams who want configurable digital forms for SWMS, JSA, Take 5, permits and timesheets in one place.

Where it wins

  • SWMS, JSA, JHA and Take 5 forms
  • Safety permits with approval workflows
  • Site inductions and toolbox talks with digital sign-off
  • Plant registers and QR pre-starts through Sitemate's Gearbelt

Watch for

  • Forms and plant are separate Sitemate products, so the SWMS and the machine live in different places

5. SafetyDocs by Mitti (formerly SafetyCulture)

safetydocs.safetyculture.com

Best for: Businesses that want a ready-written, editable SWMS document fast, with their logo and ABN on it.

Where it wins

  • A wide catalogue of task-specific SWMS, from earthmoving equipment to silica dust
  • Documents are fully editable and branded with your business details
  • Mitti adds contractor management, credentials with expiry and training

Watch for

  • SafetyDocs sells documents delivered by email; signatures and plant links were not described

Full head-to-head: Burgy vs SafetyCulture (Mitti).

6. Prestartr

prestartr.com

Best for: Civil and mining contractors who want SWMS and JHA next to plant prestarts, work orders and dockets.

Where it wins

  • Digital SWMS and JHA forms with e-signatures and PDF output
  • QR code prestarts and work orders from defects
  • Inductions and licence expiry alerts

Watch for

  • Toolbox talks and Take 5 were not described on its safety page

7. JSEAsy

jseasy-safety-software.com

Best for: Smaller businesses that want to write SWMS and safe operating procedures from a large template library.

Where it wins

  • Hundreds of ready-to-use templates across industries
  • Uses the terminology, regulator and Acts for the region you pick
  • Plant risk assessments, plus registers with service and repair logs
  • Licences, inductions and a training matrix

Watch for

  • Worker signatures and a mobile app were not described

8. CloudSWMS

cloudswms.com

Best for: Trades and construction businesses on Simpro who want SWMS sign-off driven by their job data.

Where it wins

  • SWMS digitally signed off and version-controlled
  • Toolbox talks with attendance, inductions and QR site check-in
  • Licence reminders and incident reporting
  • Pulls jobs, sites and workers from Simpro

Watch for

  • Plant is mentioned but how it is tracked was not described

How to choose

Work out which side of the SWMS you sit on. If you are the principal contractor collecting and reviewing other people's SWMS, you want a review workflow — HammerTech and Breadcrumb are built for that.

If you are the contractor writing the SWMS and doing the work, the question is whether it matches the day: the excavator that turned up, the operator who signed it, the ticket they hold. That is where SWMS software that also knows your plant and people earns its keep.

Common questions

What is the best SWMS software in Australia?

It depends who you are. Principal contractors reviewing subcontractor SWMS are best served by HammerTech or Breadcrumb. Teams that want flexible forms should look at Sitemate. If you just need a well-written document fast, SafetyDocs sells them. If you run your own plant and crews, pick something that ties the SWMS to the machines and people on site — Burgy or Prestartr.

Do SWMS need to be signed by workers?

Under the model WHS Regulations, a SWMS for high-risk construction work has to be prepared in consultation with the workers doing it, and kept available for as long as the work runs. A signature is not the only way to show that, but it is the one most businesses use. Tools that capture signatures on a phone — Burgy, Breadcrumb, Prestartr, CloudSWMS and others — make that record easy to produce when asked.

Is SafetyCulture SafetyDocs still available?

SafetyCulture rebranded as Mitti in August 2026. When we checked on 16 October 2026, SafetyDocs was still selling SWMS documents at safetydocs.safetyculture.com, linked from Mitti's product menu.

Can SWMS software track licences and tickets?

Most here can. HammerTech and Breadcrumb check operator licences against plant, Burgy and Prestartr send expiry alerts, and CloudSWMS sends renewal reminders.
