Each system, and who it suits

1. Burgy

burgy.com.au

Best for: Civil contractors running 5–50 machines who want plant maintenance and the site safety paperwork in one system.

Where it wins

  • A failed prestart raises a repair job automatically. Mark an item critical and a fail on it takes the machine out of service and alerts admins
  • Service schedules by hours, km or both, with a colour-coded countdown per machine for the workshop
  • Parts lists, part groups, service parts kits per machine per interval, and purchase orders
  • Attachments tracked as their own assets, with their own prestart and a history of which machine they were on
  • SWMS, JSA, Take 5, toolbox meetings, licences with expiry alerts, crew and machine rostering, and clock on/off timesheets in the same app

Watch for

  • No telematics, NHVAS or stocktake
  • No live job costing, and Xero is the only accounting connection

2. Gearbox

gearbox.com.au

Best for: Heavy-vehicle fleets that need NHVAS mass and maintenance compliance, telematics odometer feeds and a proper parts store.

Where it wins

  • Automated NHVAS mass and maintenance compliance reviews
  • Multi-site stocktake, stock transfers and purchase orders
  • Telematics integration for odometer readings
  • Driver prestart app with real-time fault reports and jobcards

Watch for

  • No SWMS, JSA or site timesheets — a second system for site safety

Full head-to-head: Burgy vs Gearbox.

3. Assignar

assignar.com

Best for: Contractors whose hard problem is scheduling crews and plant, costing jobs live, and feeding MYOB, Sage or an ERP.

Where it wins

  • Scheduling board for people and equipment, with clash detection
  • Live job costing, with wet, dry, standby and travel hire rates
  • Integrations with Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks, Sage, Acumatica and payroll
  • Hours-based maintenance and per-shift prestarts

Watch for

  • Parts, purchase orders and a defect-to-repair workflow were not described on its site
  • Safety is custom forms; SWMS, JSA and Take 5 are not named

Full head-to-head: Burgy vs Assignar.

4. Prestartr

prestartr.com

Best for: Civil and mining contractors who want QR prestarts, work orders, SWMS and dockets in one place, with telematics.

Where it wins

  • QR code prestarts and defect logging on site
  • Work orders created automatically from field defects
  • Telematics integrations and timesheets and dockets
  • SWMS and JHA with e-signatures, and licence expiry alerts

Watch for

  • Parts are tracked on work orders; service parts kits and attachments as their own assets were not described

5. Sitemate Gearbelt

sitemate.com

Best for: Teams already using Sitemate's Dashpivot forms who want plant registers, schedules and QR prestarts alongside them.

Where it wins

  • QR code pre-starts and inspections through an operator app
  • Maintenance schedules, reading logs, issues and work orders
  • Pairs with Dashpivot for SWMS, JSA, Take 5 and timesheets
  • Asset QR codes and compliance documents stored against each asset

Watch for

  • Safety and plant are separate Sitemate products; parts management was not described

6. Mitti (formerly SafetyCulture)

mitti.com

Best for: Larger, multi-site operators who want inspections, training, contractor management, sensors and analytics at scale.

Where it wins

  • Maintenance triggered by odometer, runtime hours or time, with work orders and telematics
  • A library of 59,000+ templates and 1,000+ training courses
  • Contractor management, credentials with expiry, sensors and IoT
  • Analytics across the whole operation

Watch for

  • SWMS come as templates via SafetyDocs rather than tied to the plant on site
  • Parts and service kits were not described

Full head-to-head: Burgy vs SafetyCulture (Mitti).

7. Fleetio

fleetio.com

Best for: Road-going vehicle fleets that want deep parts inventory and a long list of telematics integrations.

Where it wins

  • Service reminders by miles, kilometres, hours or time
  • Parts inventory by location with low-stock alerts and purchase orders
  • Native telematics integrations including Geotab and Samsara
  • Linked assets, and failed inspection items raise issues

Watch for

  • US-built; no Australian safety documents such as SWMS or JSA found

How to choose for a civil fleet

Start with what breaks first in your business. If it is NHVAS audits or a parts store nobody can count, that is a Gearbox job. If it is getting the right crew and the right excavator to the right job, that is Assignar.

If it is the gap between the site and the workshop — the operator finds a fault, nobody hears about it, and the SWMS for that machine lives in a different system — pick something that covers both. That is the gap Burgy was built for, and Prestartr and Sitemate cover it in their own ways too.

Whatever you shortlist, run a real prestart on a real machine in the trial before you decide. Also see our guide to the best SWMS software in Australia and fleet maintenance software.

Common questions

What is the best plant maintenance software for a small civil fleet in Australia?

For a 5–50 machine civil fleet that also has to carry SWMS, JSA and prestarts, the shortlist is Burgy, Prestartr and Sitemate (Gearbelt plus Dashpivot), because each covers both plant and site safety. If you run heavy vehicles under NHVAS, Gearbox is the stronger pick. If your real problem is scheduling crews and costing jobs, look at Assignar.

Which plant maintenance software handles NHVAS?

Of the seven here, Gearbox is the one that markets automated NHVAS mass and maintenance compliance reviews on its own site. Burgy does not do NHVAS.

Is SafetyCulture the same as Mitti?

Yes. SafetyCulture rebranded as Mitti in August 2026, and safetyculture.com now redirects to mitti.com. The asset maintenance, inspections and training products carry on under the Mitti name.

Do I need telematics for plant maintenance?

Not necessarily. Telematics saves typing hour-meter readings, which matters on a big fleet. Smaller fleets often log hours at prestart or service. Gearbox, Prestartr, Fleetio and Mitti integrate with telematics; Burgy does not.

Who wrote this comparison?

Burgy did, so weigh that. We have tried to be fair: every competitor fact was checked on the vendor's own site on 16 October 2026, the sources are listed at the bottom, and each entry says who that system suits best — including where it beats Burgy.
